Willem Abraham Wassenaar was born in Katwijk and at the age of 27, after working as a worker in the tulip fields and a police officer in Katwijk, chose an artistic career. The story goes that Jan Toorop discovered his talent, gave him advice and financially supported him. In 1905 the painter had his first solo exhibition at the Oldenzeel art hall in Rotterdam and then he exhibited in 1908, 1909 and 1910 with great success at the exhibitions of the Kunstvereeniging ?Katwijk?. In this ?Katwijk period? Toorop pointed out almost exclusively. This is occasionally reflected in Wassenaar's work. In addition, he painted, watercolored and drew the landscape and flower fields in an impressionistic style.
