Nazarenes

The Nazarenes were a group of German romantic painters who wanted honesty and spirituality back in art. This group can therefore be seen as a reaction against neoclassicism and opposition to the education system. They were eager to make art again that embodied spiritual values. Their inspiration therefore came from artists from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This idea was very influential, right up to the rise of the pre-Raphaelist movement. Rebellion against the system is something that led to the avant-garde in the nineteenth century, so the Nazarenes can be seen as the first to do this.
