Corneille - “Palm Festival”

Work by the pioneering artist Corneille, published in 1992. Corneille's recognizable style is clearly visible in this work. It gives a very good impression of how he visually shaped one of his many journeys through Africa during this period.

Corneille lived from 1922 to 2010 and was a pioneering painter and poet with many faces. In his early years he was a member and founder of the Cobra movement in the Netherlands with his friend Karel Appel. With his work he shook the staid traditional art world in the Netherlands on its head. His work of that time evokes the world of the child analogous to the expressionists such as Paul Klee and Joan Miro. In the period after 1950, the works are more abstract and inspired by the inhospitable landscape that he observed during his many travels through North Africa. From the mid-1960s onwards he painted more figurative canvases based on colorful paradisiacal places that were appreciated by a large audience.
