Ger GERRITS (Nieuwer-Amstel 1893 - Amsterdam 1965)

Gerrits' father was a meritorious amateur painter. 1914 - 1918 Performs military service during the 1st World War. 1918 Trains as a lithographer. 1920 Works as an advertising artist, paints in his spare time and becomes a member of the artists' association ?the Independents?. Exhibits successfully at exhibitions of this association. 1925 Becomes a board member of ?the Independents?.1928 Decides to devote himself entirely to free painting and graphics. Paints in realistic style interior and street scenes, among other things.Social compassion is reflected in his work.1928 Becomes a member of the artists' association 'de Brug' and exhibits at their exhibitions. 1935 Becomes a member of the artists' association ?de Grafische?. Gerrits feels attracted by the ideas related to the ?pure image? of the Style Group. His work is stylized more soberly and more strongly.1941 During the Second World War, he took an active part in the artists' resistance together with Gerrit van der Veen and Willem Sandberg, among others.1945 Works mainly in the abstract and is one of the champions of the dissemination and acceptance of abstract art. Founds the BBK (Management of the Visual Artists Scheme), as well as the professional groups of the Dutch Association of Painters and the Circle of Graphic Artists and Drawing Artists.1946 Organizes the exhibition '12 Painters' in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam together with colleagues. Is co-founder of the artist group 'Vrij Beelden'. In this period Gerrits painted compositions with floating forms, influenced by Kandinsky's work, in which emotional and rhythmic aspects are important. The imagination of the cosmic order is central. 1950 Initiator and founder of Creation, Association for the Promotion of Absolute Art.
